Come Monday, a host of new guests will make a public appearance at the Alipore zoo.

A white tiger, a pair of leopards, three hyenas and four yellow anacondas will be shifted to their enclosures on Monday. The big cats and the snakes are new guests at the zoo and were kept under observation.

The hyenas are more familiar with the park — they were rescued from the forests of south Bengal around five years ago.

July 29 — Monday — is celebrated as International Tiger Day.

The reptiles are going to have the most colourful enclosure.

A patch of Amazonian rainforest has come up on the southwestern corner of the park to display the four snakes, which arrived at the zoo on June 13 from Madras Crocodile Bank and Centre for Herpetology in Mamallapuram, 58km from Chennai, where they had been bred in captivity.

The enclosure is full of orchids, ferns and other tropical plants. Sprinklers attached to the roof are triggering “artificial rain” multiple times a day. A stream of water dribbles past a series of rocks and flows into a water body.

The white tiger, Rishi, was brought from the Patna zoo under an exchange programme in the last week of June. The Alipore zoo got a tiger and three pairs of blackbucks in exchange for a female zebra.

“Rishi has been brought in to infuse new blood in the park as most of the male tigers here are fairly old,” said V.K. Yadav, member-secretary of Bengal Zoo Authority.

Rishi will for now be kept at the new enclosure for the tigers on the western corner of the park. The enclosure with glass walls has acres of open space.

The two young leopards arrived at the Alipore zoo from the Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri on July 19.

Shishir and Nayan will be kept at the leopard enclosure on the southwestern corner. Another leopard which stays there will be moved to an adjacent shelter.

The three will be brought out in turns.

Shishir and Nayan were found as cubs at a tea garden near Kathambari forest in the Dooars in May 2018. They were raised at the Siliguri park.

The hyenas — two males and one female — were rescued from the forests of south Bengal. The female was a few months old and had a leg broken when rescued from a forest in Jhargram.

“She was nursed at the zoo and has recovered well,” said an official.

The hyena enclosure is near the new glass enclosure for the tiger.
