Celebrated for its unique style of colourful, ritualistic dances in fanciful costumes, set in tune with simple yet captivating music, Uday Shankar?s innovative dance form has enthralled and entertained generations of audiences the world over. To mark his birth anniversary, Paschimbanga Rajya Sangeet Academy, in association with West Bengal Dance Group Federation, hosts Uday Shankar Dance Festival 2004. The festival features classical forms like Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri, Bharata Natyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam, as well as folk, modern and experimental dance forms. Among other performances, Prakriti, by the Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe will grace the inaugural evening?s programme. The dance festival commences today with a colourful procession from Uday Shankar Sarani (Golf Club Road) to Rabindra Sadan at 1 pm.
