Gold haul, trio held

Three youths were arrested at Sealdah station on the charge of smuggling gold biscuits weighing 12kg and worth Rs 3.5 crore. "The trio were nabbed when they were about to board the New Delhi Duranta Express," an RPF officer said. "The three were from Uttar Pradesh. They had come to the city separately and assembled near Eco Park, where they received the consignment."

Survivor critical

Faiz Ahmed Siddique, who was injured in a car accident on the Bypass that left a 19-year-old girl dead early on Sunday, was in a "comatose state and on full ventilator support", an official of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals said on Monday. Faiz suffered critical head injuries.

Hospital fire

A fire broke out on the second floor of the emergency building of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning. The hospital's pathology unit is on the second floor. Four fire tenders doused the flames.

Shiksha Ratna

The state government on Monday conferred the Shiksha Ratna award on Father Felix Raj, the principal of St. Xavier's College, Calcutta, at a programme at Nazrul Mancha on Monday. Education minister Partha Chatterjee handed over the award to Felix Raj. In 2014, the government had conferred Banga Bibhushan on him.
