Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday released a booklet chronicling instances when police had restricted his movement and the number of cases lodged against him since he became the leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

The BJP leader said a copy of the booklet, with a cover letter, would be sent to the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Union home minister, chief ministers of other states and other leaders of the Opposition from the NDA.

“I want the nation and the public to know how the leader of the Opposition is treated in Bengal. This (the booklet) proves the statement made by the NHRC that in Bengal there is no rule of law but the law of the ruler,” Adhikari said at a news meet.

The booklet is called 1956, a sarcastic reference to the number of votes by which he defeated Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in the 2021 Assembly polls. It lists four incidents of police blocking Adhikari’sway and 26 police cases.

Adhikari said only those cases mentioned by the state government before Calcutta High Court made it to the booklet. “There are 10 to 12 other cases against me,” he added.

“It is unprecedented that so many cases have been slapped on the leader of the Opposition,” Adhikari said. I was not present in 80 per cent of the cases and many are related to old incidents. None of these cases was there before May 5 (2021, when the Mamata government was sworn in for the straight third term).”
