Suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma sent an email to Kolkata police on Monday seeking four more weeks to appear at Narkeldanga police station in connection with a case registered there over her remarks on Prophet Mohammed.

Sharma purportedly cited concern about her security while making the plea.

The city police had asked her to appear at Narkeldanga police station in north Kolkata by June 20.

Sharma has been charged with offences including promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race and place of birth, and deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

Assembly resolution

The West Bengal Assembly on Monday passed a resolution condemning comments by Sharma and axed BJP leader Navin Jindal on the Prophet. The BJP walked out of the assembly before the resolution was moved.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the incidents of arson that took place in three parts of West Bengal in protest against the derogatory comments were uncalled for.
