Malda, Dec. 8: The Trinamul Youth Congress leader who threatened and heckled two power officials and was sacked by the party said he had made a 'small mistake' after surrendering before police today.
'In politics, mistakes do happen. Then again there is a matter of learning from them. Ami je kaajta korechhi sheta ektu bhool hoye gechhe (Whatever I have done was a small mistake),' said Biswajit Roy, who was the Malda district Trinamul Youth Congress vice-president but was expelled for six years on December 5, the day he stormed a WBPDCL office.
Roy also attempted to give the impression that though he was expelled by Trinamul, he had not been blacklisted. A senior party leader in Calcutta, however, said the party would have nothing to do with him.
' Amar bohishkar niye rajyo netrittor shonge kotha hoyechhe. Ami Kolkata te chhilam. Neta der kothay ami surrender hochhi. Amar bishoy ta tara dekhbe (My expulsion was discussed with the party leadership. I was in Calcutta, I am surrendering because party leaders have told me to. They will look into my case),' Roy said today in Malda.
In Calcutta, when told about Roy's assertion, a senior party leader said: 'There is no question of backing a partyman whom we have expelled for anti-party activities. He might have been in Calcutta but we have no truck with him.'
Roy today surrendered along with two of his associates.
The youth leader was perceived to be close to Moazzem Hossain, the Malda district Trinamul chief, who made him the party youth wing district vice-president.
Roy was sent to judicial remand for seven days by the chief judicial magistrate's court. The two supporters were given two days' jail custody.
On Friday, Roy had heckled and threatened an engineer and a manager of WBPDCL when the Trinamul supporters led by him had gone to the state power utility's office to give a petition alleging electricity bill irregularities and inflated bills.
Assistant engineer Anirban Saha and assistant manager Bijoy Shankar were pulled up by their collars and Roy threatened to slap Saha, saying: 'I will peel off your skin. Want to see?'
On the same day, the divisional engineer of the power company, Saibal Majumdar, lodged a police complaint against Roy and others.
The police had arrested nine persons since Saturday.
Government lawyer, Jayanta Majumdar, while opposing the bail plea of Roy, did not seek police custody for Roy.
