Calcutta: The officer-in-charge of Jadavpur police station who had allegedly assaulted a doctor at CMRI on Wednesday evening got himself discharged from the Ekbalpore hospital and admitted to another hospital on Thursday.

Doctors at CMRI said Pulak Kumar Dutta, 50, did not specify why he wanted to be discharged. He later got himself admitted to Ruby General Hospital, off the Bypass.

Two complaints were lodged against Pulak Kumar Dutta, the officer, with the deputy commissioner of police, south, on Thursday evening.

One was filed by Srinivas Geddam, a postgraduate trainee at CMRI who was allegedly assaulted by Dutta, and the other by other junior doctors at the hospital.

The police are yet to register any case.

The hospital had on Wednesday lodged a complaint against Dutta with Alipore police station.

Geddam has described in his complaint how he was allegedly assaulted and the circumstances leading to it. The other junior doctors in their complaint have demanded action against Dutta.

Dutta had allegedly slapped Geddam, 28, originally from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and grabbed his neck when he asked the police officer for some clarifications regarding his medicines.

Dutta was admitted to the hospital early on Wednesday after he had suffered a hand injury and underwent surgery in the afternoon.

Geddam and his colleagues had told Metro on Wednesday evening that the sixth-floor corridor where the trainee was allegedly attacked was under CCTV surveillance. The police, however, said they had not yet received any footage from the hospital.

"We are conducting an inquiry to ascertain what had happened with the complainant. We have not got any CCTV footage from the hospital," said an officer in the office of the deputy commissioner of police, south.

Dutta has apparently told investigating officers that he had not assaulted any doctor.

"He said Geddam had misbehaved with him and thrown away the file containing Dutta's prescription and other medical details," an officer at Alipore police station said.

"He also said his left wrist had just been operated on and he could not have slapped Geddam or grabbed his neck with only one hand."

Geddam and other postgraduate trainees at CMRI had started a ceasework on Wednesday demanding that Dutta apologise to them. The ceasework was withdrawn after additional commissioner of police, Aparajita Rai, talked to the junior doctors early on Thursday.

"The officer apologised to me on behalf of the patient. She also verbally assured us that a departmental inquiry would be initiated against him," said Geddam.

No such inquiry started till late on Thursday.
