Gangtok, Oct. 8: Although still untouched by terrorism, Sikkim — the state credited with being the most peaceful in the country — today enforced the law that seeks to tackle the menace.

The home department today issued a notification enforcing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota), which is in place all over the country after Parliament passed a legislation earlier this year.

The notification designates the district and sessions court, East and North, at Gangtok as the special court to try Pota cases.

The special court will try all cases related to the Act.

Chief minister Pawan Chamling had supported the decision of the National Democratic Alliance to enfore the legislation, criticised by the Opposition.

Former chief minister and the lone Opposition member in Sikkim, Nar Bahadur Bhandari, who had spoken out against the decision to frame a new law to replace the erstwhile Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, had feared that the law could be misused to “harass” the Opposition.

He had stressed on the need for certain provisions to ensure that such “misuse” is avoided.
