Narkeldanga: The 21-year-old who took a bullet in his right leg during a clash between rival gangs over real estate spoils on Thursday had allegedly visited some construction sites recently to collect money.
One of the highrises Seikh Danish had visited was promoted by Seikh Mehmood.
Danish and his friend Irshad would allegedly visit the construction sites and threaten the promoters to pay up. Thursday's incident is suspected to have been an act of retaliation.
"Danish's father claims Mohammed Shagir, a local goon, orchestrated the attack," said an officer of Narkeldanga police station. "We are also probing if Danish was actually shot at or if the bullet slipped out accidentally from a small arm he was carrying."
Witnesses said Danish, who was speaking to someone on his cellphone, was shot at by a bike-borne group who fired on his right leg and moved ahead 200 metres to hurl bombs.
The firing occurred outside the entrance of a high-rise on Narkeldanga Main Road around 7.15am.
"We have asked for a medical report of Danish's injury to understand if it was self-inflicted or he was actually shot at," a senior officer said. "Forensic experts have already collected samples from the spot."
