A trainload of scientific attractions has trundled into platform 8 of Sealdah station. Mounted in 13 coaches of Sciencexpress are images, multimedia presentations and models dealing with topics from Big Bang to cellular functions in the human body.

The four-day exhibition, targeted at students of Class IX and above, ends on Tuesday.

Calcutta is the 37th stop on the 182-day journey of the train — a collaboration of the science and technology ministry, Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre in Ahmedabad and Max Planck Society in Germany — that started on November 30 last year.

The first run of the train started in October 2007. The Joy of Science laboratory, offering students an opportunity to conduct over 50 experiments, is the added attraction on this journey.

The exhibits include meteorites, tree rings, a pendulum that records changes in the environment and models of Chandrayaan and Astrosat.

“The team on board comprises 50 project co-ordinators, technicians and experts, and 35 science communicators,” said Dilip Mirzapure, a project co-ordinator from the science centre.

The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm on Tuesday, before the train rolls to Malda. Entry is free.
