Calcutta, April 16: Economist Abhirup Sarkar, who led a delegation of Trinamul-leaning civil society members for a meeting with the Election Commission today, likened the violence during the Assembly elections to "incidents during school games".
Hours later, a CPM worker in Budge Budge was beaten to death by suspected ruling party workers.
The delegation met Bengal chief electoral officer Sunil Kumar Gupta and alleged that the poll panel was being unfairly harsh on Trinamul. Two days ago, a team comprising poet Sankha Ghosh and actor Koushik Sen had complained to the poll panel of unprecedented terror during the Assembly elections.
"The polls in Bengal so far have been peaceful. A handful of incidents that has taken place usually takes place here. A few stray, minor incidents of violence, yes. But such incidents take place during school games too," Sarkar said after submitting a memorandum addressed to chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi.
Today's team also had historian Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri, poet Subodh Sarkar and singer Pratul Mukherjee.
In the evening, CPM worker Bimal Ghati, 42, was hacked to death by suspected Trinamul activists when he was downing the shutters of his grocery shop. Trinamul said the murder was the fallout of a CPM faction feud.
