The Sector V authorities have built a new road in anticipation of the rush that will result once their eight-storied car parking plaza opens next year.

This new stretch — Road no 36 — connects the under-construction parking plaza at AQ 11 to the ring road facing the water body behind Sector V.

The road was inaugurated by minister Firhad Hakim on July 2 in the presence of minister and local MLA Sujit Bose, Debashis Sen, chairman, Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA), and other dignitaries.

Hakim unveiled the plaque for the road. “IT sector services are doing so well in our state that Sector V isn’t able to meet the demand alone. New Town, with hubs like the Silicon Valley, are contributing too. So such roads are necessary to ease communication between the twin IT hubs,” said Hakim.

Bose added that the 350m stretch may be short but was essential. “Thousands come to Sector V to work and traffic management is a challenge. The ring road itself was a great breakthrough in connecting areas like Mahisbathan and Polenite to Sector V and now this road will further make transportation easier,” said Bose.

Sen shared how difficult it was for NDITA officers to find space for a new road in the middle of a bustling township. “This area used to be an unkempt jungle before but it was important to built this road to cater to the parking plaza expected to open in March 2020. The eight-storied plaza will house 800 cars and 120 food stalls and so without another road to disperse all those cars, the traffic would get jammed,” said Sen.

Since the road has two sharp bends, two convex mirrors have also been installed at the turnings to increase visibility.
