Family members of Avijit Singh, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital student who has been missing since Saturday, met police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha at Lalbazar on Tuesday and lodged a kidnapping complaint against unknown persons with Tallah police station.

Singh has been missing since he left the college hostel on Indra Biswas Road, a few minutes' walk from the campus, on Saturday, two days before the start of the fourth semester exams.

Avijit's father Umeshwar Singh, a schoolteacher in Bihar's Muzzaffarpur, had come down to Calcutta on Sunday and met the police commissioner and joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh on Tuesday.

"Avijit Singh's family came to Lalbazar today and lodged a kidnapping complaint against unknown persons with Tallah police station," Ghosh said.

"First we went to Nabanna, where we were told to meet the commissioner of police. He (the police chief) gave us a patient hearing and asked the missing persons squad to look into the matter. We also met the joint commissioner (crime), who said we should lodge a written complaint if we think Avijit was kidnapped. So, we lodged a kidnapping complaint with Tallah police station," Avijit's father said on Tuesday evening.

The family has not received any ransom call since the student's disappearance, sources said.

Umeshwar and his uncle Jitendra were taken to several government hospitals on Tuesday and shown bodies in the morgues. The medical college has set up a six-member committee of senior doctors, headed by dean of studies Arup Kumar Das, to probe the student's disappearance.
