Two persons, both residents of Rajasthan, were apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) in South Dinajpur district on Thursday, when they had been to the district to dispose gold which one of them had looted from a house at Srinagar in Kashmir earlier this month.

The BSF posted in Hilli-I border outpost intercepted Mohammad Shoidul and Mohammad Samad Sheikh, both of whom are from different villages located on the outskirts of Jaipur, for loitering near the international border.

During interrogation, Sheikh revealed that he stays in Srinagar and deals in scraps. “Earlier this month, he had robbed a house in Chanpora area of Srinagar and decamped with some gold ornaments,” said an officer. “He had sold a gold necklace in Srinagar for Rs 40,000 and had fled with the rest of the items to Jaipur,” the officer added.

In Jaipur, Noor Alam, Sheikh’s brother-in-law, helped him contact Shajan Mondal, a resident of Trimohini in Hilli, who had apparently assured him of disposing the remaining gold against cash.

Accordingly, the duo reached Hilli. Altogether, 92.6 grams of gold which costs over Rs 3 lakh was seized from the duo.

“They have been handed over to Hilli police. The Kashmir police have been informed and a team is en route to South Dinajpur,” said the officer.

Also, a resident of Hilli has been nabbed by the BSF with 400 grams of cannabis from Aptiar border outpost. Rajib Mondal was planning to smuggle the narcotic through the border, sources said.
