Rajarhat: A new police station in Narayanpur, on the outskirts of Rajarhat, is likely to be inaugurated next month.

There is a police outpost in the area but residents have to travel more than 7km to Airport police station in Dum Dum to file a complaint.

The police station that will be under the airport division of the Bidhannagar commissionerate is beside Vidyasagar Matri Sadan and Hospital near SRCM Road, a stone's throw from the Narayanpur market.

The airport area has two police stations. The NSCBI Airport police station is in charge of the airport vicinity while the Airport police station covers around 22sq km, including places like Kaikhali, Arjunpur and Mongal Ganthi among others.

The double-storey building on a two-cottah plot has separate lock-ups for men and women. CCTV cameras have been installed in the reception area and the lane leading to the police station to record people stepping in and out of the building.

"The building as well as the personnel who will man the police station are ready," Amit P. Javalgi, deputy commissioner, headquarters, Bidhannagar commissionerate, said. "We will open it soon."

The police station is the first of four new ones coming up in the commissionerate area. It will cover more than 8sq km that has a population of more than 400,000.

An officer of the commissionerate said the area had witnessed a rise in crime because of its proximity to Rajarhat, which is undergoing a real estate boom.

Tapas Chatterjee, deputy mayor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, said the decision to have a police station in Narayanpur was a step in the right direction.

"More people are buying property in this area and a police station would mean cops serving us better."

A detailed plan, including the number of cops and vehicles required and an estimated cost, had been submitted to the home department, which forwarded it to the finance department, an officer said.
