College Street: Calcutta University will showcause two students accused of ragging a second-year BTech student of Rajabazar science college.
The syndicate, the highest policy-making body of the university, unanimously approved the decision to showcause the students at a meeting on Thursday.
"The accused students will be asked why action will not be taken against them," vice-chancellor Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee said.
The complainant has alleged that an MSc student and an MTech student had beaten him up and mentally harassed him at the Vidyasagar Street hostel, near the Rajabazar campus, last month.
Sources said the accused students might be suspended for a semester if their replies to the showcause notice was unsatisfactory.
The syndicate at its last meeting about two weeks back had decided to reserve a hostel for first-year students from the next academic year to prevent them from being ragged.
The move was prompted by four complaints of ragging lodged over the past six months.
The university has also decided to hire full-time superintendents for all 16 hostels.
