Jan. 4: Cash and jewellery were robbed from the north Calcutta home of an assistant commissioner of Calcutta police on yesterday evening.
Sudipta Nag, posted in the eastern suburban division, and his family were away during the theft at their south Sinthee house.
"I locked the home before leaving with my daughter in our car around 3pm. My husband returned home around 8pm and saw the door unlocked. He called me up to check if I had left the door unlocked while leaving," Nag's wife Lipi told Metro today.
The officer then entered the house and found the rooms ransacked. Sources said cash and jewellery worth a few lakhs of rupees were missing. Neither Nag nor his wife, however, confirmed the amount.
An officer at Lalbazar said the family had recently withdrawn the money and jewellery from bank because of a wedding in the family.
Officers in the burglary section of the detective department said someone with "inside information" had tipped off the burglars about where the cash and jewellery had been kept.
Sources said a domestic help had been detained for questioning. No one was arrested till Wednesday evening.
"This is a very peaceful neighbourhood. Moreover, the house belongs to a police officer. If such a house can be burgled, then which building in the city is safe?" a neighbour wondered.
