The state government has decided to build a 400-seater auditorium, a conference room and an information centre on jobs at Moulali Yuva Kendra as part of a plan to revamp the biggest youth centre in the state.

“The idea is to cater to the needs of the students and youths who come to the city from far-off places and put up at Yuva Kendra near Sealdah,” said Aroop Biswas, the minister for youth affairs and housing.

“The PWD has been entrusted with the job of revamping the centre. The auditorium and the conference room will make the Yuva Kendra an ideal venue for holding programmes for youths and students.”

The decision for the revamp came on a day the high court ruled floating fresh tender for renting out the canteen at the building. The canteen is spread across 1,200sq ft.

Built by the erstwhile Left Front government in the eighties, the Yuva Kendra on APC Road was at the centre of a controversy a few months ago when the Mamata Banerjee government decided to rename Dinesh Majumdar State Youth Library at the centre Vivek Library as a tribute to Swami Vivekananda.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose had opposed the attempt at renaming the library, alleging “political vendetta” behind it. Dinesh Majumdar was a founder member of the CPM’s Democratic Youth Federation of India.

“It appears not much effort has been made to earn adequate revenue from this building and make it more friendly for youths. We have decided to increase the centre’s accommodation capacity from 70 to 250 and set aside three rooms for those turning up with families,” said a senior official in the youth affairs department.

“We will soon offer the facility to book online rooms at all Yuva Kendras in the state from the Moulali centre.”

Piracy arrest: Police arrested Swapan Roy, a resident of Bhadreswar in Hooghly, from the College Street area on Friday in connection with the alleged sale of pirated Visva-Bharati books. Cops seized 1,200 pirated textbooks of classes XI and XII from a room in Patuatola Lane where Roy was present.

Wells filled up: Officials of Bidhannagar Municipality filled up two 40ft deep abandoned wells in a Salt Lake DF Block plot on Friday. Officials said the step was taken following reports of people falling into wells across the country.
