Park Street: The first McDonald's outlet in the city has shut up shop.
The Park Street joint was formally vacated on Saturday after being closed for over a month because of legal battles.
The signboard with the golden arches are still there but the interiors resemble a place under construction with debris spread everywhere.
The furniture and kitchen equipment at the 3,000sq ft store was removed over the past couple of days.
Lawyers and representatives of Dipak Singh alias Munna Maharaj, the tenant, handed over the keys to representatives of Park Street Properties Pvt Ltd, the owner, around 2pm on Saturday.
Park Street Properties, owned by the Karnani family, and Singh, Calcutta's catering king, have been fighting in court since 2008 over the property.
Singh had sublet the property to Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd, which runs the fast food giant's outlets in east and north India.
The city civil court had ruled in favour of Park Street Properties, which Calcutta High Court set aside in 2014. On August 29 last year, the Supreme Court overturned the verdict and upheld the lower court's eviction order.
So, what about the other outlets in the city? They are limping. Two have been closed for long because of "short supply of raw materials".
Vikram Bakshi, MD, Connaught Plaza Restaurants, said the Park Street outlet shut down because the landlord lost the case against the owner of the property.
"We had to vacate because of the court order. All other restaurants suffered because our logistics partner turned rouge... but we have reopened and are serving our customers in Calcutta," Bakshi said on Saturday evening.
A spokesperson of the Karnani family said CPRL had approached the city civil court asking it to be made a party to the case between Singh and Park Street Properties.
But the court refused. "They then moved the high court. On January 19, the high court ruled against them, and gave them 15 days to vacate the premises," he said.
