Jalpaiguri, March 22: The Congress-Trinamul Congress-led municipal board of Jalpaiguri came under fire from Opposition councillors for presenting the vote-on-account today.

Submitting a letter to the municipal chairman, the councillors branded the board’s move a “gross violation” of the model code of conduct and accused it of corruption.

Chairman Mohan Bose presented the details of the income and expenditure of the civic body for the current financial year and also placed the budgeted expenditure for the first quarter of the new financial year.

Opposition leader Sibapada Bhowmik said the last date for presentation of such an account was December 31 as the elections had been declared. “Otherwise, it is necessary to take permission from the government to present the account at an extended date. That was not done,” he alleged.

The municipal chairman, however, dismissed the allegations as “baseless”. “We were given permission to present the vote-on-account. We don’t understand why the councillors call it illegal,” Bose said.
