July 17: A 29-year-old senior analyst at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was run over by a speeding car on Sunday evening while waiting in front of his maternal uncles' north Calcutta home for someone to open the gate.

The incident occurred in a bylane off Raja Manindra Road, near Mohit Mancha in Paikpara, around 7.10pm. The car, a Maruti Eeco, hit Jeet Ghosh and crashed through the iron gate of the four-storey building before coming to a halt.

Jeet, flung inside the compound on impact, was declared dead at RG Kar hospital.

Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, the deputy commissioner of police (north), said today that the owner of the vehicle, Suman Malakar, had been arrested. "He has been booked for rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence. We are looking for the other accused," he said.

Investigators would not say whether Suman, who lives close by, was in the car or not at the time of the incident. "There are allegations that the occupants of the car were drinking. But we have not found any conclusive evidence," said an officer at Chitpore police station.

Witnesses said it was hard to fathom why someone would drive a car so fast through a bylane barely wide enough for a car and a motorcycle.

Jeet, who lived a block away, had gone to his maternal uncles' house to plan a holiday. "Our family goes for an annual vacation. This year, we were planning to visit Shimla-Manali. Yesterday we had gathered for the first meeting. Jeet was late. I called him over and he said he would be with us in a few minutes," recounted a cousin who was upstairs when the accident occurred.

Jeet, an MBA, would compose music as a hobby and had planned to launch his own album this Puja. He lived with his elder brother, who is a civil engineer, and their mother. "They lost their father at a very young age. Their mother worked very hard to bring them up. Ours is a close-knit joint family. After what happened, nothing will feel the same," a family member said.
