Jalpaiguri, Sept. 1: Students of Jalpaiguri Law College took to the streets this morning, demanding immediate intervention of the administration and North Bengal University (NBU) to break the deadlock regarding admission to the first-year LL.B course.

The college authorities had not issued any admission forms for the five-year course this year after NBU refused to renew the affiliation of the college. The university had objected to “certain anomalies in the functioning of the governing body of the college”. Since its establishment in 1981, the college has been renewing its affiliation every year before the admission of first-year students.

“Problems cropped up when the university authorities objected to the renewal of affiliation. They said there have been certain anomalies in the functioning of the governing body of the college,” said Debaditya Roy, a senior student of the college.

According to college sources, the NBU had also objected to the absence of a permanent principal and the pending of registration of the institution under the Societies Act. Besides the fact that the 160 seats in the first year are lying vacant, the fate of more than 250 students of the college seems to be hanging in balance because of this development.

Sunil Chakrobarty, the lecturer-in-charge of the college, said: “We are waiting for the district magistrate, the chairman of the governing council, to come back from leave. Then we will see what can be done to procure affiliation from the university.” The controller and registrar of NBU could not be contacted.
