Salt lake Indira Gandhi Girl’s Senior Secondary School, celebrated its annual event “Euphoria” at EZCC recently.

The programme started with principal of the school’s Dum Dum branch, Uday Singh, and principal of the Salt Lake branch, Rituparna Sarkar, lighting the inaugural lamp. This was followed by Durga Vandana, a welcome dance performed by the students of classes X and XII.

Some of the youngest students from the nursery and kindergarten sections put up an item called Party Time for which they dressed up like fairies and princesses in pink and white frocks. While they performed, a slideshow played in the background showing pictures of the practice sessions.

The best thing about their performance was their smile. The choreography was simple enough for them to follow and hence they enjoyed themselves dancing, with the smiles across their cheeks never fading. Upon being asked who had taught her the moves, a little girl murmured: “Munmun ma’am” and ran away even before letting out her name.

MLA Sujit Bose arrived later and and spoke about his long association with the school’s parent body. “I have been associated with the Indira Gandhi Memorial Group of Schools for the last 15 years. For all middle class families who want their daughters to get quality education in an English medium school, this is one of best and most affordable options available,” he said.

Children of classes IV, V and VI and those of classes IX, X and XI put up two medleys titled Harmony and Towards Enlightenment.

Well-known singer Rupankar Bagchi came to do the honours at the prize distribution ceremony later on. He gave out the prizes to the toppers of various subjects in the Class XII Board examinations. “While asking students to concentrate on their studies, I would also urge parents not to pressure them to study all day,” said Bagchi, who also sang a bit of E tumi kemon tumi, his hit song from the film Jaatishwar.

Actor Soham Chakraborty made a brief appearance.

Sinchita Bhattacharya, physics teacher of the senior secondary school, directed a Bengali drama titled Chikitsha Shonkot. On being asked about the rehearsals, she said: “Our students had started rehearsing over a month back and there were many girls who participated in more than one item. Their energy surprised us. They would practise hour after hour enthusiastically.”

Mandira, a student of Class XII, was seen in the green room dressing up for her performance. “I will be sitting for my Board exams this year but I couldn’t afford to miss out on being a part of the school function for the last time. My friends who are not participating are also involved in some way or the other. Many of them are volunteers in the organising committee,” she said.

The audience loved each and every performance. “I enjoyed the dance by the tots and also the Bollywood fusion number,” smiled Rahi Bhattacharya, who had come to watch the show as her mother is a teacher at the school.

The function ended with a vote of thanks by the rector of the IGM Group of Schools, Manan Ojha.
