College Street: Students of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital gheraoed the principal on Thursday evening demanding hostel accommodation.

The police rescued principal Uchhal Bhadra late in the evening after receiving a call from him. The students accused the cops of assaulting them. Officers of Bowbazar police station, however, denied the allegation.

First-year MBBS students have been allotted seats in a new hostel building this year. But 110 students from second to fifth year have been agitating since June 24, alleging they have been denied hostel accommodation. They have demanded rooms in the same building as first-year students.

"The Medical Council of India rules specify that first-year students must be provided separate accommodation and no senior student would be allowed there. This is part of the anti-ragging measures taken by the council," principal Uchhal Bhadra said.

"The senior students have been protesting and I had promised to look into their problems once the admission process was over. But they refused to listen," Bhadra said on Thursday night.

Bhadra said he had been allowed to move in and out of his office all day but when he was about to leave for home around 7pm, the agitating students stopped him. "I called the police and they rescued me," Bhadra said.

"I cannot go against the medical council directives. So, it's not possible to allow the senior students in the same hostel with the first-year students."

School protest

Students and guardians agitated outside a school in Rajarhat on Thursday after a video of a student of the school getting intimate with a teacher went viral on social media. The protesters damaged doors and windows of the school building. A police team rescued the teacher. No complaint has been lodged yet.
