Malda, May 19: Despite making inroads into north Bengal, Trinamul got wiped out in Malda with two ministers of the Mamata Bamerjee government, Sabitri Mitra and Krishnendu Chowdhury, failing to retain the Manikchak and Englishbazar seats, respectively.

Of the 12 Assembly segments in the district, 11 were secured by the Left-Congress alliance and the BJP won the Baisnabnagar seat.

Krishnendu who has been winning from Englishbazar since 2005, was defeated by Nihar Ghosh, who contested as an Independent backed by the Left-Congress alliance, by a margin of 39,727 votes.

Sabitri lost by 12,603 votes to Congress' Mohammad Mottakin Alam. She has been an MLA from the district for 25 years since 1991 and this was the first time that she lost.

Among the other Trinamul nominees who were defeated was Abu Naser Khan Choudhury who switched to Trinamul from the Congress last year. He lost to his nephew, the Congress' Isha Khan Choudhury, in Sujapur by a margin of 47,080 votes.

Moazzem Hossain, the Malda Trinamul president, lost from Malatipur. He came third behind the Congress and the RSP.

Shocked with the results, Trinamul leaders in Malda initially avoided giving reactions. They said they had not expected the results given that the party did so well across the state.

The district leadership wants the party high command to analyse the reasons behind the debacle.

"The manner in which Krishnendu has been giving opportunities to members of his coterie to earn money proved to be counter-productive," said a Trinamul leader on condition of anonymity.

A section of Malda Trinamul attributed Sabitri's defeat to the highhandedness by her immediate family members in all matters. "Sabitri and her family members have been using Trinamul as their fiefdom and that is why she was rejected," said a leader.

Sabitri said she was trying to find out the reasons behind the defeat. "I am trying to figure out why I lost. I have been betrayed by a section of party workers who did not work for me. Let me go through the details of the result."

Krishnendu said he felt let down by the voters. "As the MLA of Englishbazar, I had brought in Rs 600 crore for the development of the area. I have also tried to stand by the people. I did not expect to lose," he said.

Congress's Isha who defeated his uncle said: "The sitting MLA (of Sujapur) who happens to be my uncle, had been consorting with criminals. The people are fed up with the free run the criminals have in the area. The notorious Kaliachak area is in Sujapur and people have voted against Trinamul for allowing criminals to roam freely. That is why Trinamul was rejected."

Abu Naser said he was disappointed. "I stood by the people and worked for them. I wanted to be a part of the work that Mamata Banerjee has been doing in the state. Now that I have lost, I am disappointed."
