Residents making their way from Ultadanga towards Khanna cinema would be in for a surprise. To the left just before climbing Aurobindo Setu is a clock tower under construction. A brainchild of local councillor Amal Chakraborty, it is as Bengali as the Big Ben in Lake Town is English. If the latter was inspired by the London landmark the one being built here has fibre glass panels modelled on Bishnupur terracotta art. Even the figures on its dial are in Bengali.
But both clock towers have a common maker — Sunil Pal. The 39-year-old, in fact, is giving us another tower — our own Eiffel replica, coming up in Eco Park.

Ultadanga
At 170ft, the Eiffel Tower would be the tallest of the three. “An elevator is being installed in it. It would take visitors up to a height of 50 to 60ft,” says Pal.
The second is the Big Ben, at 128ft, which came up at a cost of about Rs 1 crore.

Lake Town
The Ultadanga clock tower, being built at a budget of about Rs 20 lakh, is 43ft tall. “A Tagore statue that was installed at the spot would be reinstated inside the structure with a bronze finish,” Pal said. Around 70 panels with Bishnupur terracotta motifs have been affixed to a steel frame.

Chakraborty is looking at a Nava Varsha date to inaugurate the clock tower.
