Metro has long been highlighting tout raj in different parts of the city but cops are yet to learn a lesson (Tout and taxi torment at city gateway, May 18). I think police are hand in glove with touts.
The moment you step out of Howrah station, touts surround you and force you to take a taxi of their choice. One can find several taxis parked next to the prepaid booths but very few actually are available for those who want to go the legitimate way. The touts demand exorbitant fares and hapless passengers, in a hurry to reach their destination, give in to their demands in most cases. Police personnel are hard to find in the vicinity and even if you find one, it is unlikely that you will get any help from them.
The police force survives on public money, yet does not bother to end public suffering at the hands of touts — from the airport and passport office to Howrah station taxi booths.
It is a shame that our state has such an ineffective and callous police force. Kudos to Metro for fighting for the common man.

AtrocityApropos the report “Cuffs for click on Kella cartoon”, April 14, the way the professor has been sued and harassed by the hooligans and police is astounding. What sort of atrocity and vindictiveness is this? Our state is in a terrible situation.

It has been proved once again that politicians change once they are in power. Before the elections, chief minister Mamata Banerjee was talking of paribartan and promising to turn Calcutta into London. Today, she has turned Bengal into a laughing stock.
I am glad that R.K. Laxman is not alive. Otherwise, he would have been imprisoned for the rest of his life, courtesy the CM of Bengal. If a professor is beaten up and then imprisoned because he had forwarded an email, God help Bengal. There are so many issues to be handled with priority and the CM is racking her brain over a cartoon. This shows the CM’s immaturity. She might be good as a street fighter but not as a chief minister.

Social menaceSex trafficking is a curse for our society, the foundation of which lies upon elements of trust, fidelity and moral responsibility.
We salute the initiative taken by Apne Aap, Gloria Steinem and the Buffett juniors (A-team to tackle sex-ploitation, April 9).
Such an initiative is the need of the hour and if everyone starts realising this and makes this a part of one’s social responsibility, a day will come when we shall have a stress-free, happy environment with no victims of prostitution.
Kudos to the team for the initiative to eradicate this social menace.

I think it is a great effort by Gloria Steinem and Jennifer Buffett. I think they have got the potential to be successful and the combination will be able to combat sex trafficking in Calcutta.

Passport peeveI had applied for my son’s passport on November 24 (File No. F025307). The police verification was done in January and they sent the report to the Regional Passport Office on Brabourne Road in February. However, the passport has not yet been issued.

Helping handI am proud of Sufia Khatoon for helping Shila Ghosh (She found support and gave back inspiration, April 2). She did a wonderful job. I have also made up my mind to help this old lady.
