Clarification

The picture accompanying the report “Highrise fear followed by feast” on April 12 shows that the Infinity building has developed a crack on the façade after the earthquake.

All our buildings are structurally strong enough to withstand such tremors. What was shown in the photograph was a bulging-out of the Aluminium Composite Panel Cladding on the building exterior, which was pre-existing. No damage had been caused by the quake.

Kella cartoon

The assault on the Jadavpur University professor and his subsequent arrest is shocking. Cartoons have been made of the most respected and renowned persons in the world and I am not aware of anyone being enraged by them. Everyone takes them in good spirit. But for some reason our chief minister prefers to be an autocrat and a dictator. She thinks everything that happens in Bengal is to malign her.

If this is the paribartan we voted for, we are ashamed of ourselves.

Vineet Ruia

We, the electorate of Bengal, had not been aware that the word paribartan would mean the fall of democracy and the rise of autocracy. I wish to refrain from writing any more for the fear of the guardians of law at my doorstep any moment.

Swimming lessons

It is good to know that students of La Martiniere for Girls are learning to combat fire (Students learn ropes of fire safety, April 10). Given the frequent incidents of fire in different parts of the city, the training is most practical and worth emulating.

It might help if students were also taught how to swim. Many students drown while bathing in rivers and ponds.

Hate story

Apropos the report “Paoli too hot to handle at home”, April 11, I think it will take some time before the Indian society gets adjusted to such shows of flesh despite the fact that the Ajanta-Ellora cave paintings and sculptures show that sex was not a taboo in our ancient society.

Spreading sex education from the school level will go a long way in avoiding such action against dare-bare films.

Debabrata Sengupta, Howrah

I strongly oppose the censor board’s decision. The board is extremely insensible. A handful of people cannot decide what the people of Bengal should watch.

Ridhima Sen

I wonder what the members of our state censor board have to say about an ad film where a girl is repeatedly shown kissing a man or a television reality show portraying a porn star as a celebrity. When they are so concerned about an actress showing her bare back, shouldn’t they be concerned about these things as well?

Passport peeve

My sister had applied for a change of address for her passport (E7138303) on September 26, 2008.

The passport officials delayed the process for more than a year, during which the passport expired. She had to apply for renewal of her passport. We have approached the passport office several times but received the same reply every time — that the file (No. M013635, Year: 2008) is in process.

Kudos to Metro for reporting about the online passport application mess.

Let me share my experience. My mother’s passport application was submitted on September 14 and police verification was carried out in December. Almost four months hence, we have still not received the passport. The status of the application reads: “It is to regret that due to unavoidable circumstances the despatch of passport has been delayed and will now be despatched in a week’s time.”

The same status has been on display for more than two months. I will be travelling soon and want to take my mother along, which I cannot do in such a situation.

My son Sharan Banerjee, a Class XII student at Don Bosco Park Circus, had applied for renewal of his passport on January 5 after nearly a month of trying to get an appointment online. The police verification took place on February 23. Till date we have not received his passport although the website mentions that the passport application has been granted and police verification report has been submitted. Does the printing of a passport and its despatch take so long?

Sujoy Banerjee

I applied for a passport along with my parents on May 12 last year. They received their passports in September but I am yet to get mine (file No. W542051). The passport status since October has been: “to be dispatched within a week”. I wonder how long a week lasts for passport officials?

Inspiration

I was inspired and touched after reading about octogenarian Shila Ghosh in Metro. I profusely thank Sufia Khatoon and the others, who have tried to help her.

Siddhartha Chakraborty, Salt Lake

Kudos to Sufia Khatoon for doing a great job. I support the cause. The story of Shila Ghosh is inspiring.
