Siliguri, April 15: The engineering student whose body was found hanging at a rented house in Jalpaiguri yesterday did not commit suicide, his relatives have alleged.
Police, however, recovered a suicide note from the room where Siddhartha Basu’s body was found. It said he was suffering from depression for the past few days and that nobody was responsible for his death.
“My nephew cannot commit suicide as he had not shown any sign of depression or anxiety. In fact, he seemed completely alright when he had called his mother the previous night,” Amit Ghosh said.
Today, Ghosh, Siddhartha’s father Madhusudan Basu and two other relatives arrived in Jalpaiguri from their Barrackpore residence near Calcutta.
The relatives also alleged that Siddhartha’s two SIM cards had had gone missing. “Although his mobile is there, the two SIMs that he had are missing. That is why we suspect that he did not commit suicide,” Ghosh said and added that they would file a complaint soon. “We want the police to probe the matter thoroughly so that the real reason for the death can be ascertained.”
A third year student of mechanical engineering of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, Siddhartha used to stay in the rented house at Maskalaibari in Jalpaiguri along with his two classmates.
The 21-year-old who was described as a well-behaved and intelligent student by the college authorities was the only son of Madhusudan and Sumitra Basu.
On the discovery of the suicide note which had not been found yesterday, a police officer said the room had not been searched thoroughly earlier. “Today, it was found when the room was searched in the presence of the relatives.”
Jalpaiguri police said they were yet to receive any complaint from the student’s family. A case would be started only after receiving the complaint.
