Kalighat: Metro services were disrupted for around 40 minutes on Thursday morning when a man jumped in front of a Dum Dum-bound train at Kalighat station.

The 22-year-old man, a Chetla resident, survived because the train had slowed down while entering the station and the driver applied the brakes in the nick of time, a Metro official said.

He fell in the drain between the tracks.

Three coaches of the AC train had pulled into the station when the man jumped at 8.52am. The man was lifted from the tracks after the train was moved back at 9.26am and taken to SSKM Hospital.

He suffered head injuries but was discharged later in the day, a hospital official said.

Trains were suspended between Maidan and Tollygunge. Trains ran between Noapara and Maidan and Tollygunge and New Garia (Kavi Subhash).

"A power block was needed to pull out the man. So, trains had to be stopped between Maidan and Tollygunge," the official said.

Maidan and Tollygunge are among the stations that have a reversal point for trains to switch tracks.

Normal services resumed at 9.38am.

Hundreds of commuters had a tough time because of the disruption. In the truncated service period, the interval between trains was more than usual, several passengers claimed.

Students and those headed to offices were the worst hit. At Kalighat station, scores of people were seen scrambling out of the station to board buses, autos and cabs.

Trains ran overcrowded even after full service was restored.

On April 11, an 80-year-old man had survived after jumping in front a Dum Dum-bound train at Bansdroni station.

There have been two suicides at Metro stations this year.

A Class XI girl jumped in front of an Kavi Subhash-bound train at Tollygunge station on April 9.

A man from Cossipore jumped in front of a Tollygunge-bound train in Shyambazar on January 23.
