Jalpaiguri: A high level team from the Calcutta High Court led by Chief Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya visited here on Sunday to check out the temporary infrastructure that has been readied by the state government and the district administration for opening of the circuit bench of the high court.

It is a long standing demand of north Bengal residents to set up a circuit bench in the region.

During the three-hour visit, the Chief Justice, who was accompanied by state tourism minister Gautam Deb, officials of district administration and representatives of Jalpaiguri Bar Association, visited the Dak Bungalow of Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad on Station Road that has been renovated and developed for the circuit bench.

The team also went to some other locations, where residences for Judges and the Chief Justice have been prepared.

Along with the temporary infrastructure, the state has also taken the task of building permanent infrastructure of the bench for which land has been earmarked at Rajbaripara of the town and funds to the tune of Rs 350 crores has been allocated.

"We have planned to finish work of the temporary infrastructure by July 31 and almost 90 per cent of the work has been done. We have also tried to meet the recommendations made by the high court. During the current visit, they have made some more recommendations which we expect to finish by this month," said the state tourism minister.

He said work on the permanent infrastructure would start after Durga Puja.

In course of the visit, the team spent around two hours at the Dak Bungalow premises. Some of the recommendations they made include creating spaces for keeping books and computers and installation of sound systems in the courtrooms and installation of electronic display boards outside courtrooms, said sources.

Members of Jalpaiguri Bar Association and Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench Dabi Aday o Sarbik Unnayan Samannoy Committee met the Chief Justice and submitted written requests to him at the circuit house.
