Jadavpur: A score of 60 per cent in mathematics in the Class XII examination is still the baseline for entry into BTech courses at Jadavpur University, the authorities have clarified after a misprint in this year's brochure benefited students who would otherwise be ineligible.
Chiranjib Bhattacharya, dean of the faculty of engineering and technology, said the eligibility criterion fixed ahead of the 2016-17 academic session had been "reintroduced".
"We somehow failed to enforce the amended eligibility criterion this year," he told Metro.
According to the information brochure published by the state JEE board, students need a combined aggregate of 60 per cent in physics, chemistry and mathematics to be eligible for an engineering seat.
This was JU's cut-off for two years before former dean Sivaji Bandyopadhyay got it amended in 2016 to 60 per cent in mathematics and an equal aggregate in physics and chemistry together.
A member of the engineering faculty said the mistake in the 2017 brochure was noticed when students who had scored below 60 per cent in mathematics came for admission after being allotted seats in JU through the centralised e-counselling system. Based on the older norms, someone with 45 per cent marks in mathematics could get into JU by scoring a total of 135 in physics and chemistry.
JEE board chairman Malayendu Saha denied that his team had overlooked JU's amended admission criteria. "We published whatever the university stated was its eligibility criterion. The same practice is being followed for next year's exam."
