Construction of the Joka-Esplanade Metro at Majerhat, where work was stopped after the collapse of the bridge, is set to resume following a no-objection letter sent by the state government to the railways on Wednesday.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the go-ahead almost a month ago.

Calcutta police’s letter to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd, the implementing agency of the Joka-Esplanade project, reads: “There is no objection from our side regarding the immediate resumption of the since suspended Metro construction work….”

Metro rail officials said they had asked the private contractor to redeploy its men and machinery at the site immediately. Of the 72 people who were working at the site, two died in the bridge collapse.

“It is, however, difficult to resume work before the festive season is over. The workers have all gone back home for the Puja. Also, traffic congestion in New Alipore and its adjoining areas will make it impossible to carry construction materials to the site,” an official said.

Construction was stalled after the Majerhat bridge had collapsed on September 4. Two days later, the police had issued a letter asking RVNL to stop work. The site where the Majerhat station is being built is barely a few metres from the collapsed bridge.

The government had initially suggested that vibrations caused by work on erecting Metro pillars could be responsible for the collapse. Metro denied the allegation.

The government had also stalled laying of tracks of the Noapara-Baranagar-Dakshineswar Metro in Dunlop. The police had stopped work till October 6 but is yet to allow RVNL to resume the work.
