Jalpaiguri foresters and Alipurduar police have seized illegal Burmese teak worth Rs 20 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, respectively.

Foresters of Baikunthapur forest division’s Belakoba forest range seized an illegal consignment of Burmese teak from Karatowa on NH27 in Rajganj block of Jalpaiguri, on Sunday. The estimated cost of the logs is Rs 20 lakh. Two persons have been arrested.

“The logs were hidden under sacks of broken glass,” said a forester, adding that the logs were loaded on the truck in Guwahati, Assam, and were headed for Maharashtra.

In the other incident, Alipurduar police seized Burmese teak at Barobisha on the Bengal-Assam border on Saturday. “The truck was on its way to Siliguri from Assam. The driver and cleaner were arrested. Logs worth around Rs 50 lakh have been seized in the raid,” said a police officer.
