The parents of the Irish NGO worker who was allegedly raped by a Calcutta youth in his Kalighat flat are likely to be in the city by Wednesday.

The 22-year-old woman is being treated at a private hospital in the city since Saturday after taking an overdose of prescription drugs.

A hospital official said her condition had improved and she was shifted from the intensive care unit (ICU) to a private cabin on Monday evening.

“The Irish embassy in Delhi contacted the woman’s parents in Ireland and they have planned to fly to Calcutta this week to meet their daughter,” said a police source.

On Monday, a representative of the embassy flew in from Delhi and met the woman at the hospital. Katie Morrisroe, second secretary of the embassy, spoke to doctors and hospital officials regarding the woman’s treatment.

According to the sources, Morrisroe also spoke to the rape victim.

“She is recovering and has been shifted to a private cabin. She has not yet said why she had consumed so many medicines,” said an official at CMRI Hospital, where the unconscious woman was admitted on Saturday morning by one of her friends.

She had texted her friend in the wee hours after consuming 10-15 pills, including paracetamol, sleeping pills and painkillers, said police.

The detective department of Calcutta police is investigating the rape.

“We will speak to the woman as soon as doctors say she is fit to talk to us,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner, Calcutta police.

The Irishwoman had reached Calcutta on May 7 and met the accused, 25-year-old Sujoy Mitra, on the dance floor of a nightclub.
