Rising infertility among couples in Calcutta is bringing in clinics from outside in the city, said experts at a seminar on Tuesday.

“In the last five years, there has been at least a 20 per cent rise in the number of infertility patients in Calcutta. So, clinics abroad and within India are showing an interest in coming here,” said Rohit Gutgutia, clinical coordinator at Nova IVI Fertility clinic, a joint venture between Nova Pulse, India and IVI, Spain.

According to him, stress-induced infertility was on the rise among people working in night shifts at call centres. “Around 20 per cent of the new patients with infertility are from call centres,” he said.

“Delay in having a child because of professional reasons is also affecting fertility,” said Manish Banker, executive director, Nova IVI Fertility.

Obesity and smoking are also common causes for infertility, said the experts.
