The mother's head bowed. The father reading out a Thank You note on his darling daughter's 28th birthday, even as she looked on... from a giant frame in the backdrop. Sharon and Vijay Singh, on Wednesday evening, remembered daughter Sonika Simone Singh Chauhan, who died after a car crash on April 29. Graceful in grief, the couple from Hastings thanked friends and family for the "support you have given us through this difficult period of our lives". "Today, on our beloved daughter Sonika's birthday we can reaffirm our faith in truth. We can reaffirm our belief that justice will always prevail. We thank the citizens of Calcutta. We thank the media for allowing us to grieve in dignity. We thank the Calcutta police for quietly but efficiently doing their job. We are so proud of the men and women in uniform who work diligently for the city 24x7," said Vijay.For the "all-rounder" that "Sonu" was, her parents instituted a foundation to keep alive "the love and madness". "Today we launch the Sonika Chauhan 27 Foundation. The work it will do will keep her alive in our hearts and touch the lives of many Sonikas in Calcutta who want to live their dreams," said Vijay. The foundation aims to raise funds to help young girls in Calcutta under the age of 27 to pursue their hobbies and dreams outside the regular curriculum of study... in sports, modelling, the arts, dancing, acting, self-improvement... and to provide help to the underprivileged. The first campaign is the Designated Driver campaign steered by prominent social clubs in the city with "responsibility behind the wheels" as the motto."Sonika's friends, buddies and colleagues... our Sonu lives on through all of you," said Vijay as the special birthday cake was cut.
