Malda, April 18: Two local Trinamul leaders allegedly threw hot oil on two BJP workers at Rajnagar Bazar More in Baisnabnagar on Sunday, hours after the voting was over.

The ruling party activists have been accused of carrying out the attack on Sujoy Bose, 40, and Dhiren Mondol, 43, both of whose arms have been scalded. The injured have been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

Swadhin Sarkar, the BJP candidate from Baisnabnagar, has sent a written complaint to the Election Commission.

"Around 10pm yesterday, two of our supporters were sitting in a shop that sells pakoras (fries) at Rajnagar Bazar. Suddenly, two Trinamul booth committee leaders, Sujit Ghosh and Gaji Ghosh, came with 20-25 others and attacked them with iron rods. They took some utensils from the shop, filled those up with hot oil, poured the liquid on our supporters and fled," Sarkar said.

Bose and Mondol said they were being harassed by Trinamul supporters as they work for the BJP. "Both the Trinamul leaders had been threatening to kill us. We did not leave the BJP and that is why we were attacked on Sunday," said Bose, who runs a stationary stall in Rajnagar Bazar.

Mondol is a teacher at a private primary school in Baishnabnagar.

Doctors at the hospital said both had burn injuries on their arms and Mondol had wounds on the head, face and chest also. "One person has suffered 60 per cent burns on the head, face, arms and chest and is in a serious condition," said a doctor.

The BJP has lodged a complaint with Baisnabnagar police.

In Chanchal, 60km away, the Malda CPM has accused Trinamul of attacking a party worker and his family at Kharba.

"Our active worker Abdul Alim, his brother Abdul Halim and a relative, Rosy Bibi, were attacked by Trinamul-sheltered criminals with rods and lathis. A polling agent of our candidate in Englishbazar, Nihar Ghosh, was detained in a house in ward 9 for almost three hours by Trinamul after voting got over at 6pm. We complained to the police who rescued him. We have sent written complaints about the incidents to the Election Commission," said Ambar Mitra, the CPM Malda district secretary.

The CPM has filed a complaint with Chanchal police about the Kharba attack.

About 5pm today, Chanchal's Congress MLA Asif Mehboob, who is the alliance nominee this time, and 5,000-odd others gharoed the police station.

"Our alliance workers are being attacked by the ruling party. In Chanchal, Trinamul knows that it is going to lose and it has started targeting the Congress and the CPM workers. We are protesting against the police who are sheltering Trinamul goons who are carrying out attacks. We are apprehensive that the police will start false cases against alliance workers at the behest of the ruling party," Mehboob said.

The agitation continued till around 9.30pm.

Malda police chief Syed Waquar Raza said: "There were two incidents of violence following the polls. The police are investigating and looking for those involved."

Trinamul district president Moazzem Hossain denied that his party men were involved in the attacks. "No one from our party was involved in the attacks. It is a result of BJP infighting and Trinamul is being wrongly blamed," he said.
