A civic volunteer in Malda district has been accused of raping a homemaker on October 31 when she was alone at home during Kali Puja.

The 24-year-old woman filed a complaint at her area's police station on November 1. On Monday afternoon, she filed another complaint at the office of the Malda superintendent of police, alleging that her area's cops had not yet acted against the accused.

Manoj Mondal, the civic volunteer, claimed the charge was false.

The woman, whose husband stays elsewhere for work, was alone at home at her parent’s place on the night of October 31.

“My parents were attending the community Kali Puja in our neighbourhood. Around 10.30pm, Manoj Mondal entered our house and raped me. When I raised an alert, neighbours and my parents rushed in. He then fled,” said the woman.

She alleged that Mondal and his aides beat up her elderly parents when they protested. “Mondal and his aides hit my father with an iron rod. He had to be treated in a local hospital. We filed a complaint at our local police station but the cops proved indifferent and didn't take any steps against Mondal so far. That is why, I went to the SP’s office yesterday (Monday) and filed a complaint, seeking his intervention,” she added.

She alleged that Mondal and his associates asked her to withdraw the complaint. “They threatened me and my parents with dire consequences. We are feeling insecure,” she said.

Mondal claimed he was framed.

“My brother had a fight with her father which led to the injury. She raised baseless charges to malign me. At the time she stated in the (police) complaint, I was attending a puja with my wife,” he said.

Ujjal Dutta, the BJP chief of Malda north (organisational) district, said the police were trying to shield the accused.

“The police are acting ignorant as a civic volunteer was involved. It is disgraceful. We won't let them shield a person accused of rape,” Dutta said.

The accused in the RG Kar rape-and-murder, which shocked the nation, is a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy.

Ashish Kundu, Malda TMC spokesperson, said the police had filed a case against the civic volunteer. “If the charge is proved correct, the person should be punished. BJP leaders should refrain from politicising it,” he said.

A probe was on, senior police officers said.
