Calcutta, Sept. 16: Calcutta High Court today directed Narada News chief editor Mathew Samuel to file an affidavit by October 2 mentioning how he "masterminded the entire (sting) operation and what was done thereafter".

The division bench of acting Chief Justice Girish Chandra Gupta and Justice Arindam Sinha held that unless it knew about the "details" of the sting, which showed images of people resembling several Trinamul leaders accepting cash from Samuel, it would not be proper to order a criminal investigation.

"The court should know how Samuel masterminded the entire operation and what was done thereafter. Only after getting the details, the court will decide its course of action," acting Chief Justice Gupta said.

The court directed Samuel to file the affidavit by October 2 and fixed the matter for hearing on October 4.

This is the first time the Narada case came up for hearing before the division bench headed by acting Chief Justice Gupta. The case was earlier being heard by the bench of former Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Arijit Banerjee.

The court was hearing two PILs seeking a CBI inquiry into the matter.
