No more fashion statements on college campus |
Siliguri, Sept. 21: Siliguri College is thinking of introducing a dress code for students.
Surprisingly, the students themselves are not particularly unhappy about it.
In fact, the college authorities decided to act on the matter after they got some interesting responses from the students at a seminar organised by the women?s study cell of the institution some time ago.
?It was the students who came forward and said they were not comfortable with the clothes some of them wore to college and asked us to do something about it,? said Jhinuk Dasgupta, convener of the cell.
But at a time when several colleges across India are imposing dress codes on students, Siliguri College has decided to adopt a more ?democratic approach? to the contentious issue.
?We do not want to impose any sort of code straightaway on our own because restrictions imposed like that produce reverse results,? said college principal Malay Karanjai.
The cell has already begun an informal survey among students and the college authorities will act on the basis of the students? feedback.
Some students are even thinking in terms of uniforms. ?Uniforms are better because in that case differences in class and strata, which are visible in the clothes we wear, will not be there,? said Kritee Choudhury, a second-year student of Mass Communication at Siliguri College.
