Malda, Nov. 17: A 14-year-old girl abducted by traffickers from North Dinajpur’s Kaliaganj two months ago was rescued by police from a brothel here last evening.

Sources in the Englishbazar police station said the inspector-in-charge of Kaliaganj, Prabir Das, had contacted them on Saturday, asking for assistance to carry out the rescue operation in the red light area of Hangsagiri Lane.

The girl’s mother had accompanied the police team during the raid conducted jointly by the Kaliaganj and the Englishbazar police.

“We live in Chandipurushaharanghat village in Kaliaganj. My daughter went missing one evening two months ago while she was going to take private tuitions. She studies in Class IX and she is the younger of the two,” the mother said.

The girl’s father, a farm labourer, had filed a missing person’s complaint with the local police station.

The inspector-in-charge of Englishbazar police station, Bipul Majumdar, said the girl’s family was very poor.

“We are trying to find out how much cash had exchanged hands when she was sold to the brothel. The kingpin of the flesh trade and his family members were not present when we raided the place. The girl refused to return home, and the mother had to persuade her,” he added.

The rescued girl could not mention the name of her abductors and no arrests have been made till now.

The superintendent of police North Dinajpur, Shankar Singha, said his men were trying to identify the traffickers.

“The parents had filed a missing diary, but they have not made any complaint after the rescue. We are investigating the case along with the Malda police,” Singha said.
