April 24: Calcutta police today arrested a Congress worker in Salt Lake for allegedly duping a doctor of Rs 40 lakh by promising to get his son admitted to a private medical college.
Sudip Dey was picked up from his BJ Block home in the morning following a complaint by the doctor, a resident of Haridevpur.
The complaint, lodged with Haridevpur police station in December 2016, was against Dey and several other men.
Sleuths said they had found bank records to suggest that the complainant had transferred Rs 26 lakh through real time gross settlement (RTGS) to the account of one of the accused. "Another Rs 14 lakh was paid in cash," an investigator said.
The accused had apparently claimed he had "good contacts" in the administration and promised to get the doctor's son admitted to a private medical college if he coughed up Rs 40 lakh. "They did not specify which college they would get the student admitted to," an officer said.
This was the second arrest in connection with the case. The first arrest was made earlier this month.
Congress sources said Dey had contested the Salt Lake civic polls in 1995 and joined the Trinamul Congress after it came to power in 2011. "He went back to the Congress around three years ago over some differences with a Trinamul leader in Salt Lake," said a source.
Body found
The body of a 25-year-old youth was found on the banks of the Hooghly in Titagarh, in North 24-Parganas, on Monday morning.
