Aug. 6: A woman lost her forearm and eight people were injured this morning when a truck grazed the Matador they were in near Sovabazar Metro station.

Tapati Roy, 35, was returning home to Baguiati with a group of people after cremating a neighbour in Nimtala when the accident occurred at the Jatindra Mohan Avenue-Aurobindo Sarani crossing.

Roy's right forearm was severed and her neighbour Nilima Roy suffered a fracture in the arm, police said.

The other injured are Nikita Sarkar, 14, Paramita Pramanick, 16 and Niranjan Mondal, 34.

Both vehicles were speeding when the accident occurred around 3.30am, the police said.

The truck was headed towards Ahiritola and the Matador towards Ultadanga, a traffic police officer said.

"The woman had rested her arm on the Matador's wooden plank to the right. As the truck grazed the vehicle, her forearm got severed," the officer said.

Roy's husband Sanjit said people from their neighbourhood had gone for the cremation in three trucks and a Matador.

He was in one of the truck and hadn't seen the accident.

"All the trucks stopped suddenly. As we craned our necks to see what had happened, I saw the first Matador parked diagonally on the road... women were screaming," he said.

"We rushed to check on them. As I reached the Matador, I saw my wife bloodied and lying on the vehicle's floor."

Sambhu Shaw, who runs a tea stall in the area, said he and a few others had run out of the shop on hearing a loud noise and tyres screeching.

"We saw the Matador and a severed forearm lying on the road," Shaw said.

The injured, including Roy, are in RG Kar hospital. "We managed to stop her bleeding but she is critical," a doctor said about Roy.
