Central Avenue: A fire broke out at in an office on the 10th floor of the 14-storey LIC Building, Jeevan Prakash, on Central Avenue at 8.45pm on Friday.

No one was trapped or injured in the fire, a fire officer said.

Ten fire engines, including a skylift, were used to bring the flames in control in 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire is still to be ascertained but prima facie, a snag in the AC unit could be the reason, the fire officer said.

Esplanade-bound traffic had to be diverted at the Central Avenue-Ganesh Chandra Avenue crossing till past 10.15pm as fire engines were stationed on the road.

"I saw flames leaping out from a small corner and I called police," Bipal Chatterjee, a guard at the building, said.

Chatterjee was the first to alert the police about the fire.

Subhankar Ghosh, the station-in-charge, headquarters, of the fire department said his men sprayed water from the 10 engines while a team broke down the glass windows to let the smoke escape from the building. "There were stationery items and wooden partitions, which are inflammable. But we managed to bring it under control and there were no injuries," Ghosh said.
