Calcutta, Oct.10: The Parama flyover opened its accident account on Saturday, less than 24 hours after its inauguration.
Two youths on a bike speeding down the Park Circus-bound flank of the flyover were injured when their vehicle lost control and rammed into the divider near Viswakarma Building around 8.30am. In the evening, there was a pile-up involving three cars but the damage wasn't grave because a snarl had already slowed down traffic.
Sheikh Miraz, 20, and Saijan Ahmed, 16, who was riding pillion, were taken to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital after the bike accident. Such was the impact of the crash that the handle of the two-wheeler broke off.
"The two-wheeler rammed into the divider and the two riders were thrown off their seats. The accident took place around 8.30am when the Park Circus- bound flank was empty and that helped the bikers speed," said a police officer.
Miraz suffered fractures in the jaw bone. A CT scan revealed clots in Saijan's brain, a source at the hospital said. Police fear that such reckless driving may turn out to be a peeve point for commuters taking the flyover.
In the evening, a private car and two taxis were involved in a pile-up. An app cab slammed its brakes to avoid collision with a private car that had stopped suddenly in front of it. A yellow taxi that was right behind the app cab rammed into it. The accident brought the already slow Park Circus-bound traffic to a crawl.
Police said the private car had stopped for a photo-op.
