Raiganj, Aug. 3: The Radhikapur-Calcutta Express was cancelled for the third time today, triggering angry protests from passengers as well as the frontal organisations of the CPM in Raiganj.

The railway authorities cited the accident at Jamirghata on Sunday night for the cancellation of the service.

People had to wait in long queues in the afternoon to get refund because there had been no prior announcement about the cancellation of the train.

Agitated passengers then joined slogan-shouting DYFI and SFI supporters who had organised a demonstration outside Raiganj railway station to protest frequent railway accidents and the authorities’ indifference to the passengers’ amenities.

“Mamata Banerjee had introduced one train after another without making proper infrastructure. The result is that the trains get derailed because of weakened earth under the tracks,” said SFI district secretary Pranesh Sarkar.

Mihir Ghosh, a resident of Ukilpara, had come to the station to book his return ticket. He was supposed to travel to Calcutta tonight with his family. When Ghosh reached the station, he found a long queue of passengers to get the refund.

“The train had been cancelled thrice in the past three days. But the railways did not make any announcements,” said Ghosh.
