Raiganj, Aug. 20: A pregnant woman died today while she was being taken to Malda after being referred by a Raiganj nursing home.

The patient's relatives ransacked the nursing home, alleging that negligence of a nurse had taken away her life.

Kuheli Bera, 20, was admitted to a private nursing home at New Ukilpara here yesterday for her delivery.

Keya Burman, the deceased's mother, alleged that because of the negligence of a nurse, the patient's condition had deteriorated and her doctor had referred her to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

The deceased's mother said: "Doctor Udayan Kundu asked the on duty nurse to inject a drug to her to regulate blood pressure. The nurse however, injected a wrong injection. The doctor rebuked the nurse for the mistake in front of me."

Soon, Kuheli's condition deteriorated and the nursing home authorities asked the patient's family to take her to the Malda Medical College and Hospital, sources said.

"As we started for Malda, Kuheli died near Gazole, around 50km from here," the mother said.

The patient's agitated relatives and neighbours rushed to the nursing home, carrying sticks and rods and ransacked the facility's reception and some rooms, sources said.

The irate mob then assembled the nursing home's furniture outside the facility and set those ablaze.

Policemen rushed to the spot along with fire engines and brought the situation under control.

No arrests have been reported so far, source said.

"There had been a tension in the area after a patient, who was under treatment at the nursing home, died after she was referred to Malda. We have started an investigation and are trying to trace the attackers," a police officer said.

The nursing home authorities refused comment.
