Raja Dutta, who had been convicted for the murder of a city businessman over a decade ago, was arrested on Sunday on an attempt-to-murder charge.

Datta, who was out on bail, has been accused of assaulting a private guard after he allegedly teased a woman in New Alipore’s Sahapur.

“The guard was assaulted on September 26. Datta had been on the run since. He was arrested from outside the Alipore court following a tip-off. His bike had a forged sticker of Calcutta police,” said joint commissioner (crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh.

Among the items seized from him were two 9mm pistols, some SIM cards and some voter ID cards.

Dutta had been convicted for the murder of New Alipore-based property developer Mahesh Agarwal. He got bail from a higher court, where he challenged the conviction.

He was again arrested in June for allegedly trying to extort Rs 25 lakh from a developer. He got bail in the second case, too.

Duo held

Lakhi Tarafder and Padma Tarafder were arrested in Baruipur on Monday on the charge of stealing jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh from a Gariahat apartment where they worked as help.
