Gangtok, Dec. 10: Police today said they would carry out surprise checks on lodges in Gangtok to find out whether they maintained proper register of boarders and the photocopies of their identity proof, the move coming a day after an unidentified man was found murdered at a hotel in the state capital.

The investigators have said the shirt worn by the deceased had the tag of a tailor in Darjeeling and hope they can soon trace the roommate of the murdered person.

Hotel Pema Dzong, where the body was found yesterday morning, didn’t enter the names and the address of the duo in the register nor did it collect the photocopies of their identity cards.

The superintendent of police, East Sikkim, Manoj Tewari, told The Telegraph that rules stipulated that every hotel should maintain the names and address of the occupants and keep the photocopy of the boarders’ identity proof.

“The details should be collected when a person checks into a hotel. Gangtok Sadar police will make surprise visits to all hotels in town and check the registers of the boarders. The police have decided to conduct the checks following the gruesome murder of an unidentified person in one of the hotels here,” said Tewari.

The SP said it was compulsory for the hoteliers to show the records of the guests to the nearby police stations every day. “It seems that the hoteliers are not taking the rules seriously. Action will be taken against those who are flouting the rules. A hotel at fault will lose its licence,” said Tewari.

Gangtok has over 200 hotels.

A senior police officer said the hotel owners were also bound by rules to submit the details and the photographs of the staff to the law enforcers.

With regard to the probe into the murder, Tewari said: “We have found the name of a tailor shop stitched to the shirt of the deceased. His inner has two alphabets written on it and we suspect them to be the initials of a laundry. Based on the two pieces of evidence, the police are carrying out the investigation.”

Sources said the shirt had a label, which mentions Novelty Tailor of Darjeeling, and ‘MS’ was written on the inner.

A police team went to Darjeeling this morning to locate the tailor shop.

“It would be a challenging job because we don’t know the exact address of the shop as the tag only mentions its name. There must be many tailor shops in Darjeeling,” said a police source.

The investigators hope the clues may lead to the man who had checked into the hotel with the deceased person. He had sneaked out of the hotel and the police suspect him to be behind the murder.

The deceased person’s body has being kept at the STNM Hospital in Gangtok after post-mortem. The police are yet to receive the autopsy report.
